Violinist, Pianist, Composer and Watford, United Kingdom.

Matthew is a musician from Watford (United Kingdom). He is currently a member of the 1st Violin Section in the Royal Opera and Ballet Orchestra in London.

He was born into a family of professional musicians and he grew up taking lessons in Violin, Piano, Trumpet and Drums. He studied Music at Royal Holloway while studying under Adrian Levine at the Royal College of Music and then the Royal Academy of Music with Hu Kun for his Masters degree in Violin performance. He went on to play in Valencia, Spain with the Palau de Les Arts Orchestra as a 1st Violinist. The orchestra was established by Lorin Maazel and frequently collaborates with Placido Domingo.

Since returning to the United Kingdom, Matthew worked regularly with the Royal Opera House, being part of the ROH Japan Tour of 2019 and becoming a full time member of the 1st Violin section during the 2025-2026 season. With the Royal Opera and Ballet, he was asked to perform for the birthday celebrations of HRH Prince Charles, in Buckingham Palace (2018). He also plays occasionally as a 1st Violin in the Philharmonia Orchestra. Matthew has toured with ROH concertmaster and world-renowned violinist Vasko Vassilev as a member of his chamber group, travelling across Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and performing for the King of Cambodia.

 He has worked with the Philharmonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra, English National Ballet, English Chamber Orchestra, Opera North, BBC Concert Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Covent Garden Soloists Orchestra. He is part of the Excolo Quartet, which has performed in various parts of Norway and even within the Arctic circle. The quartet featured as an exclusive artist on a long haul cruise from Cape Town to Southhampton, docking at many locations on the Africa continent and Europe.

Matthew has had the opportunity to work and record with such classical artists as Placido Domingo, Elīna Garanča, Lang Lang, Jonas Kaufman, Maxim Vengerov, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Jennifer Pike and conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano, Roberto Abbado, Barry Wordsworth, Trevor Pinnock, Christian Thielemann, Sir Mark Elder, Vladimir Jurowski and Yan Pascal Tortelier. He has featured in the orchestras of various popular music bands during their tours, including ABC, Deep Purple, Spandau Ballet, Squarepusher. Matthew also performed as part of the ‘Illmatic 30th Anniversary Tour’ with New York Hip-Hop icon Nas at the Royal Albert Hall.

Matthew frequently works at Abbey Road, Angel studios and Air Studios as a session musician. He has performed on numerous film, television and video game scores ranging from ‘Wallace and Gromit: A Vengeance Most Fowl’, the soundtrack for the Apple TV series ‘Silo’, the movie ‘Project Hail Mary’ and the ‘Assassins Creed’ and ‘Dune: Awakening’ video games.

As a Pianist, Matthew performs and records as a Jazz and Session musician. He produces music from home and his compositions span many genres ranging from Jazz, Electronic to Rock and experimental music. Matthew produces music under the moniker ‘CARTER’ and has released music available on all streaming platforms. He is one half of musical duo Paperblade which recently signed a number of recording contracts for music for Film, Television and Videogames. He also teaches Violin, Piano and Music Theory from beginner to advanced level.
